INMI at the 17th ESA Conference in Warsaw

Alina Cristea, Melanie Kurek and Elisabeth Scheibelhofer will participate in the 17th ESA Conference: Strengthening Democracies: Social Action, Solidarity, and Sustainable Futures.

On 26 August 2026, we will present our paper „Lived Precarity: How Experienced and Anticipated Contingencies Shape Uncertain Migration Trajectories among Migrants from CEE Countries in Austria.“ For this presentation, we draw on qualitative interview material from two research projects (WOCORO, DEMICO) and examine how precarious work and living conditions are produced through the interaction of structural conditions, experienced and anticipated challenges that already shape present decision-making. We pay particular attention to how these interconnected factors can accumulate over time and contribute to entrapment in a state of the constant experience of uncertainty.

Special Screening „Kein Land für Niemand“ – Podiumsdiskussion mit Elisabeth Scheibelhofer

Anlässlich des Weltflüchtlingstags zeigt das Filmhaus am Spittelberg den Dokumentarfilm „Kein Land für Niemand – Abschottung eines Einwanderungslandes“. Der Film setzt sich mit der aktuellen Wende in der deutschen und europäischen Asyl- und Migrationspolitik auseinander und zeigt, welche konkreten Folgen politische Entscheidungen haben, wenn Schutz, Menschenrechte und humanitäre Hilfe zunehmend hinter Grenzschutz und Abschottung zurücktreten.

Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführung findet ein Podium statt. Neben Elisabeth Scheibelhofer (Team INMI & Institut für Soziologie, Uni Wien) diskutieren auch  Anna Distelberger (SOS Balkanroute) und Anna Mielke (ROSA) insbesondere die Rolle Österreichs an den EU-Außengrenzen. Moderiert wird das Gespräch von Anna Lena Buchleitner und Michael Ladurner (Attac).

Presentation at the BSA Annual Conference 2026: 75 Years of Sociology

On the 10th of April 2026 Alina Cristea, Melanie Kurek and Elisabeth Scheibelhofer presented a paper at the Annual BSA (British Sociological Association) Conference. The presentation, titled “Not Fully Seen, Not Fully White: Rethinking Passing in the Context of Eastern European Migration,” examined how Romanian migrants in Austria are positioned within graded forms of ‚whiteness‘ tied to hierarchies of Europeanness, resulting in unequal recognition and conditional belonging. Drawing on literature on ambiguous racialisation, our presentation focused on situational strategies of passing as ‚fully white‘ and on how claims to acceptance and social membership are negotiated in everyday life.

Presentation at the ESA RN35 conference

On the 27th of November 2025 Elisabeth Scheibelhofer and Martina Kanovich held a presentation at the Migration Midterm Conference hosted by research network 35 of the European Sociological Association in Athens. It was titled „Graded Whiteness and Epistemic Borders: Anti-Eastern European Racism and the Politics of Knowledge Production in Migration Sociology“ and dealt with the different ways in which experiences of (racist) discrimination are narrated in interviews with migrants from Central and Eastern Europe in Vienna.

Forschungskolloquium: Die Forschungsgruppe „Interpreting Inequalities in Transnational Migration Societies“ (INMI) stellt sich vor

Die Forschungsgruppe „Interpreting Inequalities in Transnational Migration Societies“ (INMI) gibt in einem etwa 30-minütigen Vortrag Einblicke in ihre theoretischen Verortungen, Fragestellungen, Forschungsergebnisse sowie aktuelle Vorhaben rund um die Themen Migration und migrationsbedingte Vielfalt. Eine Verknüpfung zu theoretischen, methodologischen und methodischen Herausforderungen sowie die Besonderheiten des Forschens an der Universität (Verbindung von Lehre und Forschung; Fluktuation durch Kettenvertragsregeln) sollen zu einer Debatte vor Ort einladen.

Radiobeitrag im Wissenschaftsradio: „Dein Akzent passt nicht ins Büro“ – Citizen Science gegen blinde Flecken

Diskriminierung passiert nicht nur laut, sondern oft leise – in Blicken, Bemerkungen oder „kleinen“ Witzen. Genau hier setzt das Citizen-Science-Projekt „Diskriminierung gemeinsam erforschen“ an. Im Wissenschaftsradio der FHWien/WKO spricht Hannah Jutz mit den Sozialwissenschaftlerinnen Clara Holzinger und Anna-Katharina Draxl darüber, wie Forschung glaubwürdiger wird, wenn Menschen mit unterschiedlichen Hintergründen mitforschen. Interviewt wurden auch Co-Forscher:innen Deniel Takac, Katharina Kweta und Rob Anjinta über ihre Erfahrungen im Projekt.

Interpretation workshops with citizen scientists

With the aim of expanding knowledge about discrimination and including more perspectives into data analysis, the research project „Researching discrimination with Citizen Science“ (Austrian Science Fund (FWF) [TCS 150]) organized interpretation workshops at the Department of Sociology, University of Vienna. In these workshops participants without research expercience in social sciences analyse and discuss qualitative data on (work) experiences of migrants in Vienna. A concluding workshop to reflect on the collaboration will take place in autumn.
